Area History

Nestled among some of the Rocky Mountain’s most serene scenery, the cities of Black Hawk and Central City boast a history that’s as unique as it is extensive and a future that's prosperous and diverse.

It all began during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in 1859. Traveling across the country from Georgia, Prospector John H. Gregory hit the mother lode when he discovered the principal gold vein running through what he named Gregory Gulch. Thousands of prospectors and miners poured into the area now known as Gilpin County, named for Colorado Territory’s first governor.

Today, Black Hawk and Central City have become an original destination for adventure and excitement in Colorado. Travelers come from all over the world to get away from the daily stresses and enjoy casino games, excellent restaurants or outdoor activities.
