Referenced as the "model family-owned and run business", The Famous Bonanza Casino surprises many as just that, a non-traditional family business founded in 1992 by the Grimes Family after gaming was legalized. The family was not new to Central City; they purchased the Harris Block building in 1959 and opened The Famous Bonanza Gift Store in 1961. The Famous Bonanza name comes from the mining era, when gold was plentiful in Central City and more than one "bonanza" became famous. The gift shop earned its distinction as the result of a sculpture of a gold miner. Now called "Prospector Pete," he sat in the window prompting tourists to take photos with him.
Today, he is the ambassador for the Miners' Club. Guests who use their Miners' Club Card while playing in the casino can earn comp dollars, purchase gifts and collectibles, and enjoy free meals. When the family ventured into gaming, the gift shop underwent reconstruction in 1991. The renovations were completed with the history of the town in mind. The cast-iron facade was restored to its Victorian glory as care was taken to preserve the building and revive the atmosphere of the best of the old west, using antiques and works of art from Central City's colorful past. The casino now has over 230 slot machines and is still managed by the family. Keeping the business close to their heart serves the casino well -- they have long had the reputation as the friendliest casino in Colorado.
